Downtown Living
Dubai’s City Walk attracts a diverse mix of residents due to its convenient location and unmatched ability to walk to restaurants, coffee shops (hi Arabica!) and entertainment. The modern finishings are such a welcome starting point for residents, however, sometimes a blank canvas is the hardest to approach. It doesn’t need to be; no matter the size of the space, focus first on zoning the area, and then create focal points within those zones to build your designs around.
For this open plan kitchen/living/dining area, the zones were already fairly clearly determined by the layout. With views overlooking Business Bay and Downtown, and the Burj Khalifa dominating the vista, there was no real need to emphasise specific focal points. In the living room zone however, the tv became the default.
We wanted to create a cosy yet contemporary space, building a cohesive scheme which included repurposing the existing sofa. The preference was to keep the existing white walls, so we focussed on including strong textures alongside rich navy, grey and copper tones to bring in an element of warmth (always a challenge when floor to ceiling windows dominate the space).
The key to the statement feel in the apartment was including large-scale furniture pieces in keeping with the proportions of the space. Don’t overlook the power of mirrors - even in a large open-plan area, they can really elevate the design. Statement lighting fixtures and area rugs will also help to ground each zone.
